What are braces?
Dental braces are devices used to align and straighten your teeth. Braces are made up of metal such as stainless steel, with the brackets made up of materials of different types such as plastic, metal, ceramics or a combination thereof. Titanium is also used in braces to make them lighter. Although braces made from Titanium provide the same strength as those made from steel, they are usually more expensive.

How long does it take for braces to show results?
On average, it takes 24 months for braces to achieve the complete desired results. In some cases, the time required may be as little as a year or as much as three years. It will be at least a month before you start seeing changes and at least three to four months before major changes become visible. Although the position of your teeth will change every day with the use of braces it will be a few months before the results become visible.
Cost of using braces.
According to the National Dental Association, the average cost of dental braces for adults in the US ranges from 5000 to 7000 dollars. The cost may vary from one location to another and from one doctor to another. It is best to consult your doctor for the cost of treatment.
Advantages of using braces.
Braces are a great way to improve your smile if your teeth are not properly aligned.
Your teeth will look much better after you have completed your treatment. It will affect your smile and boost your confidence. Braces help prevent bone erosion. Disproportionate teeth affect the way we pronounce words. Aligning your teeth can help you with speech impairment caused by disproportionate and badly aligned teeth. Properly aligned teeth will help you to bite and chew food properly thereby improving digestion. Straightened and well-aligned teeth are easier to brush, floss and clean. Limitations of using braces.
The use of braces does have some disadvantages, especially during the period of your treatment.
The presence of braces in your mouth will make it difficult for you to clean your teeth properly. This may result in the accumulation of food particles and plaque in your teeth and gums leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day can help you reduce the probability of tooth decay and gum disease.
Braces may prevent you from eating your favourite food and drinks as there will be certain prescriptions with regards to the food that you can eat and that you must avoid during your treatment.
Patients are sometimes allergic to certain metals such as nickel or materials such as latex which is used in the elastic used in braces. It is possible to prevent such allergies by using alternative materials while making the braces.
The use of braces may cause some pain and irritation in places where there is friction between your braces and the gums or inner cheeks. Your doctor can suggest medication to help you deal with such problems.
